They've been rerunning SPN here the last little while and I copied some of my favourite eps. Am just watching Phantom Traveller and, man, the boys look SO young. I hadn't realized how much they'd both changed over the past five years. Some of it is natural aging, but I think most of it is damned fine acting.

They're next up on my Netflix DVD list. I think I saw about twenty minutes of a show a couple of years ago, but after listening to SPN podfics, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Some of the first year is a bit uneven in terms of storytelling and acting but this show really hits its stride before the end of that season and just goes from strength to strength as the years go on. The writers aren't afraid to have the characters feel and express emotion (something that is so often left to fanfic writers), and it's an epic over-arching story that ties the five seasons together. This show has horror (not something I particularly enjoy), humour, and an outstanding character drama about the relationship between the brothers, father, and about family.

The show's creator and producers, writers and actors are all very responsive to the fans, which is nice. They overtly attribute their success to date to the fans and did a fan tribute thank you video at the recent party to celebrate their 100th show. And they 'play' with the fandom in some later episodes, which is funny and fun, too.
