So Which Browser do Folks Recommend Now

For years, I used Explorer, and then I moved to Firefox -- but lately, it's really slow, with all kinds of ads popping up and driving me crazy. I clear out cookies and add-on extensions but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I tried Chrome but it really didn't work for me (I think my laptop may be too old.) So, any suggestions?

I use AdBlock Plus for Firefox and it has eliminated virtually all the pop up ads. Give it a try before bailing on FF.

How do I get/install AdBlock Plus? (Bearing in mind I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to techy stuff...)

You might also want to try adding Ghostery. When you load a new page, it blocks a lot of the automatic linkages that you don't even see -- like to Twitter, Facebook, various ad companies -- so the page loads faster. When you set up, there's a long list of things that it has the potential to block. I checked them all, then scrolled through the list to uncheck a few I want, like Discuss (a commenting system on some blogs).

Have you defragged your hard drive within the last 6 months? Click on 'Start', type 'defrag' into the search option just above the button, click on 'disc defragmenter'. When you clean out stuff from your HD, it leaves 'gaps' in the info, so the system can't find things as easily; defragging organizes it again.

Turns out, my system is set to defrag automatically at 1:00 AM every Wednesday. I don't know if the new computer came that way, or if I turned it on and for got. But maybe there will be a spot for you to set up an automatic defrag once you get it done.

Good luck!

Yep, I have an automatic defrag setup and do it occasionally myself just to be sure. I've gone in and deleted cookies any number of times. The program Suzanne suggested, AdBlock, seems to be working but I'll add Ghostery as well. My laptop is getting old and it doesn't take much to overload it these days so firefox is always crashing. Any of these programs that block the 'behind the scenes' traffic really helps it function and not overload. Thanks!

See you in less than 2 weeks! Syl's boss is threatening to cancel her holidays! If so, I'll head straight to Vegas and meet you guys there on Thursday. I'll keep you posted.
